2014 Movie Preview: #29 - Tammy

Plot summary: Tammy (Melissa McCarthy) is having a bad day. She's totaled her clunker car, gotten fired from her thankless job at a greasy burger joint, and instead of finding comfort at home, finds her husband getting comfortable with the neighbor in her own house. It's time to take her boom box and book it. The bad news is she's broke and without wheels. The worse news is her grandma, Pearl (Susan Sarandon), is her only option - with a car, cash, and an itch to see Niagara Falls. Not exactly the escape Tammy had in mind. But on the road, with grandma riding shot gun, it may be just what Tammy needs.

My take: Melissa McCarthy has shown she has some real comedic chops with the films she's been in over the past few years. This may be her riskiest project to date, however, given that she is the lead and doesn't have a major comedic talent sharing the headline with her (no offense to Sarandon). From the plot alone, this does not sound like anything special. However, the film has been written by McCarthy and her husband, so they likely know how to make something funny. Plus the studio is releasing this two days before the Fourth of July holiday, which suggests that they've got a lot of faith in the project as well. Until I see a trailer, I won't know for sure, but there's enough here to make me feel like it deserves a spot on the list.

Tribe Watch '13 (Week 19)

Record: 63 - 56

Standing: Third in AL Central (7 games behind Detroit)

Even yesterday's come from behind win against the Angels wasn't enough to buoy my spirits after a completely dismal week. Frankly I don't even want to talk about it. We can only hope this 10 day road trip that features the Tribe going against Minnesota, Oakland, and Anaheim puts them back on the right track (although tonight's loss to Minnesota certainly isn't a good sign). I gotta keep rooting for my team, but it's awfully tough to feel good about their postseason chances these days. Let's hope I'm singing a much different and happier tune next week. Tribe Watch '13 (Week 9)

Record: 30 - 26

Standing: Second in AL Central (0.5 games out of first place)

From a record standpoint, the Indians did better this week than the previous week, but it was still something of a letdown. The week began with the Indians splitting their series with the Reds as both teams won both of their home games. I was pleased that our starting pitching did well against their potent lineup and if we were to face them again in the World Series, I have confidence that we would not be outmatched. The Tribe then finished out their homestand by losing 2 of 3 to Tampa Bay. The first game should have been a rain out, but given the poor scheduling done by MLB, their hand was forced and the game didn't truly get started until midnight and was a battle of bullpens, so not the best display of our talent. The one that hurts is our loss on Sunday. It hurts for a few reasons. One is that is was a lopsided loss and we haven't had a ton of those so far this year. Second, it was a rare bad start by pitcher Zack McAllister. Losing that game also meant we lost the series. But perhaps worst of all is that it was a deflating loss that comes on the eve of the Tribe's most important road series of the year. Our next 9 games will be on the road against the likes of the New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, and Texas Rangers. Detroit and Texas are currently in first place in their respective divisions and the Yankees were atop the AL East last week before going on a recent skid. These are three very good teams that the Indians will need to find a way of staying competitive against. If we can somehow come out with at least 5 wins on this road trip, I'll be very happy. It'll also further bolster my confidence that this team has what it takes to play in the postseason. It may be disastrous, it may be great, but either way I'll be watching them every step of the way. Tribe Watch (Week 2)

Record: 8-6 Standing: 3rd in AL Central Despite ending on a loss today, the Indians first road trip of the season turned out to be pretty successful as they managed to go 7-2 after taking two out of three from both Oakland and Seattle. While the season is still young, there's already some trends that have been developing, both positive and negative. In the past week, with the exception of Tomlin going toe-to-toe with Seattle's Felix Hernandez, our starting pitching was not great, but typically did enough to keep the Indians in the ball game. Certainly though their performances could be better to give the offense some breathing room. Most importantly is getting Justin Masterson on track. In his past few starts, he's begun the game strong but falls apart typically when seeing batters for the second turn. If he's to be our ace, we need him to remain in the game longer and be dominant in doing so. Offensively, while the Tribe was not as mighty as they were against Kansas City, there was a lot of timely hitting, which I love to see. We frequently got some clutch hits when we needed them. And for the most part the effort is being distributed evenly. There are a couple of weak spots (most notably Casey Kotchman), but they haven't been too detrimental thus far. The good news is that we were able to produce offensively this past week without Asdrubal Cabrera, who was gone on the bereavement list. He'll be back in the lineup when the Indians play again on Tuesday. Tuesday will start a six-game homestand where the Indians will once again play the Royals followed by a weekend series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. We already stuck it to KC once this year, so let's hope we can do it again and the Angels, a team many figured would be a World Series contender, have been scuffling thus far to begin the season, so we might be facing them at an opportune time. Even if the Indians come home to some cold weather (as is forecasted) let's hope they continue to remain red hot. Go Tribe!
